I built a bird tower for myself as a sort of base while gathering information, recordings, and experiences about the forest and its inhabitants, which will be destroyed in the future as the battery industry expands. The birdwatching tower is located right on the border of the area designated for the battery industry. I mainly used the bird tower while compiling the songs of the area’s birds for my sound piece Biofonia.
The forest was completely unfamiliar to me, and I started exploring it from zero. I had hoped that frequent visits to the forest and documenting life there would foster some kind of connection to the place and create an archive of material from which I could draw inspiration and content for my artworks. For some reason, this didn’t happen, even though I’d been visiting the area since the previous summer and spring was already well underway. I felt like I was constantly fumbling in different directions, without really grasping anything. I wondered if the problem was that I simply wasn’t spending enough time in the forest, or staying there long enough at a time. I needed some kind of stillness and pause, and that required a concrete base. I ended up looking for a solution to this problem by building a bird tower, where I could spend time in peace for long enough periods.
I chose to build a bird tower because it allowed me to see further and observe both birds and other forest animals without disturbing them too much. Tt also provided me with shelter and safety at night. Once the tower was ready, I didn’t have to worry about myself—where my belongings, camera, and tape recorder were, or where I could rest, spend the night, or eat a snack. With these needs full filled, I was able to focus better on what was happening around me. Staying still and quiet also brought the birds closer to me. One night, as I lay in the bird tower, a cuckoo called out somewhere very close by. The cuckoo’s call was so powerful that for a brief moment I didn’t even realize what was happening. The sound was like a church bell right next to my ear—that’s how impressively loud the its call was. That cuckoo’s call didn’t make it into my audio archive, but it was an experience I will certainly never forget.
